1980's facelift

I have a bare spot on the wall in our hall and it needs some sort of wall-hanging.

Here is the first block that I am working on for that wall-hanging. I want a somewhat folk-art feeling to the small quilt and just used iron-on fusible for each piece and button-hole stitched to finish off the edges.

The pattern came from a book I found from the thrift store---an applique album quilt with a 1980's copyright.

Obviously the 80's involved quilts being verrrrrrrry puffy and ruffly....and not exactly my kind of color scheme.
So I pulled colors from fabrics I like and put together this block called Tulip Time:
And this block which is called, Peaceful Dove (and yes, with the colors I chose, mine is more of a Chubby Robin....)

And this one, which I love, is called Tulip Ring:

A nice face-lift for a beautiful block. I even find myself back-tracking when I walk past this when it's just sitting there my table waiting to be finished----wow. A timeless pattern that is still so desirable.

you are right---the applique blocks are still so very pretty especially with the colors you pick. I look forward to seeing your finished wall-hanging.

Can I come shopping with you? You always seem to score the great finds at the thrift store. Me? I never seem to have such luck. Anyways, your applique blocks look fabulous. Can't wait to see the finished wall-hanging.

Wow! Way to update a very dated look. They look gorgeous--you're doing a beautiful job.

The 80's were very ruffly and puffy, indeed! I remember my mom working out of this book. (That seems like ages ago.) So nice to see that you are using it with such cool fabric choices. Love the blocks.

Oh wow...that's the era I learned to quilt in! I don't think there was anything but puffy polyester available then...oh, I remember there WAS 100% cotton, but at that time, the label said you had to quilt it every 1/4 inch because it wasn't bonded or blended with anything like it is now. So puffy was the way to go. Yikes. So neat to see you putting your wonderful spin on that old pattern--it's beautiful!

I love your buttonhole-stitched applique. The way you have done those blocks, they don't look 80's at all! The radiating Tulip Ring is gorgeous.

Your blocks are looking beautiful (and not at all pufffy or 1980's-ish).
