I love Doris Day. When I was growing up I wanted to be just like her. Well, now that I am 40-ish that desire still hasn't gone away. Oh! To dress like her. To wear those types of clothes....
.
Yikes! Can you hear my daughters groaning? -- Mom! You wouldn't dare!
.
Okay. So maybe I won't actually dress like her, but I can carry a bag like one she might carry.

Time for some inspiration. And yes, I am still working out of this book -- and loving every crochet pattern that Mary Jane has put in there!
.
And I found a pattern for a lovely sweater purse. I used medium 4 yarn and size J & G crochet hook. The handle is off of a purse that I bought from the thrift store.

I love how this went together!

And amazingly, it folds into a sweater purse. So incredibly easy & yet so beautiful.

ReplyDeleteI have a friend who does this lovely crochet too. It really looks effective and you bag is beautiful with that certain old-fashioned look to it!
ReplyDeleteWonderful bag! You are so creative, I love your the way your blog looks.
ReplyDeletewell, ahem, I am 28 years old and love white gloves...and wouldn't fault you for wearing them with that darling sweater purse! I think what makes it POP is the handle.
ReplyDeleteGloves AND a hat (a pill box I think) and I think a sweater twin set, too .... would all just go perfectly with that DARLING purse !! (I think Doris would approve !)
ReplyDeleteThis purse was so cute! It also locks like it's been knitted. Never seen crockhet lock like this. (Sorry about my english writing)
ReplyDeleteWell done :)
How perfect...and the handle was a great choice.
ReplyDeletegorgeus!
ReplyDeleteI love that. Where can I find the pattern?
ReplyDeleteTeresa
Hi, the pattern for the Sweater Bag (of Turtleneck Tote another name I had considered) is in my book, Crochet That Fits, that has no increases or decreases. It has 33 patterns for garners and accessories.

Dawn I loved this so much I found myself telling my mum and explaining and discussing in detail what you did.
ReplyDeleteSo classically lovely and elegant.
*gasp* This is sooo chic, you did a great job.
ReplyDeleteHow do you do the "valley" between rows???
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm the designer of the pattern & want to answer your question. You get the valleys in the pattern by working in the back loop only (blo). It turns out differently if you're working all sc, all hdc or all dc. The sts for the Sweater Bag are all dc except then the sts on each end of the purse (that's crocheted in one piece & folded) are sc. I do agree that working in the blo, makes a project look like knitting & that's why I did it. I think #crochet that looks most like knitting in the finished project is all hdc in the blo. It's hard for even a knitter to tell the difference! Another thing that makes it look & feel more like knitting is the fact, you're working with 1 lp only just like you do in knitting, which makes the garment less dense than regular crochet where your working in both lps. Everything is explained in my book Crochet That Fits by Mary Jane Hall.
DeleteSorry I'm so late in seeing this post where you mentioned my name and showed my pattern from the book. Thank you so much :)
