broomstick lace

While the kids are busy using the pool, I am poolside and attempting broomstick lace. A very old technique only now instead of using the handle of a broom, a large, plastic knitting needle is used to crochet 'onto'.
I purchased this book which has step-by-step photos and wonderful directions. And such cute, cute projects. I would looooooove to try and crochet that beautiful shawl in the upper left hand corner........

This was my practice swatch and I loved the rippled effect that mimicked the waves in the pool. And this was so easy to do and the results are so amazing!A bulkier type of 'lace' but the feel of this in your hands is wonderful. I will have to say that trying to 'hold' the large knitting needle is quite awkward and I'm still trying to find a more comfortable way to balance that and the stitches that get slipped onto the plastic needle.

And honestly, these coasters took about 5 minutes to do. They were so much fun and easy to do!

  1. those are great, it looks like you've been knitting them your whole life. They don't look easy at all.

  2. Hi Dawn,
You're right - that shawl is lovely. But the coasters are so cute and what a great gift they'd be. I don't dare trry to learn something new to do - I can't do all I need to now! Blessings, marlene

  4. I remember seeing patterns for broomstick lace when I was learning to crochet many years ago. I've never tried it but yours looks beautifully done. I think you should try the shawl!

  5. I've never seen this before...what a lovely idea. I've tried crochet in the past and can't seem to get the hang of it (actually, I can't get the tension right on the yarn) and have given up on learning...knitting is my thing. But those coasters are darling! Love them.

  7. How cute is that! You could easily do the shawl, by the looks of it. Very interesting. I love crochet, as it is so quick to do.

  9. How cute! I don't think I've ever heard of this type of crochet before.

I do remember when I was much younger (cough), I had a contraption that looked like an H only the bars were on the top and bottom rather than across the center. You would then crochet around the l l part. It was pretty nifty. :o)

  10. I made probably 20 or 30afghans out of that broomstick lace pattern (like your practice swatch) about 20 years ago. Your post brought back lots of memories. I sold most of them and gave several as gifts. I think I need to make one again for myself! Thanks for your lovely post! Twyla
